Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Private Military Companies (PMCs) have been soaring in the post-Soviet world without any legal framework: former Russian special forces agents operate in Asia, in the Middle East and in Africa on behalf of global firms and foreign governments.
Overshadowed by the US PMCs used on a massive scale in Iraq (up to 130 000 security contractors in the late 2000s), the Russian PMCs are gradually emerging as major players in the Donbass. Commentating a report by Ksenia BOLCHAKOVA, the France 24 correspondent in Moscow, Cyrille BRET scrutinizes the origins and the geopolitical impact of PMCs on Europe.
